Pettigrew takes 1st Seniors event

Report on Seniors Meeting – Saunton 14 March

28 Devon Senior golfers, over 55 years of age and with handicaps of 8 or less, played in the first Order of Merit event of 2013 at Saunton East.

We were blessed with a most beautiful spring day with Saunton in its normal impeccable condition. The smiling and in some instances sun-tanned faces demonstrated that everyone had enjoyed their day even if their golf hadn’t been quite up to the standard they aspired to.

These Stableford or Medal competitions form part of the Seniors Scratch Order of Merit whereby the 10 leading participants are awarded points for their scratch scores. At the end of the season, the winner and runners-up receive vouchers based on their best 6 scores out of the 7 qualifying events. All such events can be found on the DCGU website and any 55 years + member of a Devon club with a handicap of 8 or less is welcome to enter. We also welcome those aged over 50 but they cannot win the OoM or scratch prizes. The Seniors Captain also uses these competitions to help him select the Channel League team which represents Devon in their fixtures against the other SW Counties + Glamorgan and Gwent.

Jim Pettigrew from Churston, a stalwart of the Devon Seniors team for several years, won the Saunton event with a very good score of 32 gross points on the back 9 from Paul Vicary of Saunton. Paul Marels of Dartmouth came 3rd on 31 points. Jim also won the handicap with 37 points despite a blob on the 16th but since he couldn’t win more than one prize, Bob Collier of Teignmouth took the handicap with 36 points ( 20 on the back 9 ) and Rick Pillow came 2nd h’cap also with 36. Scoring was overall pretty good and the CSS didn’t move from the normal 73 or 34 points.

We look forward to the next event at East Devon.
