SHEELAH CREASY BOWL & PRESIDENT’S TROPHY SEMI FINALS 2022

On Monday, 5th September, we met at Yelverton Golf Club for the Sheelah Creasy Bowl semi-final on a cool and blustery day with the threat of storms, a big contrast to the hot weather and scorched earth conditions for the quarter finals.

The first match out was Teignmouth v Wrangaton, a repeat of the pairing in the final last year. Teignmouth were last year’s winners of the trophy so the Wrangaton women were prepared to dig deep and win through for a chance to play again in the final – and they certainly achieved that, winning in the first two games and then games 4 and 5 to take the match.

The second semi final was between Ilfracombe and Honiton and this proved very exciting – not to mention very wet for the later games!  Ilfracombe took the win in games 1, 2 and 3 but Honiton were fighting back with wins in games 4 & 5. It was all very tense, not helped by difficult communications meaning scores didn’t come in quickly, but Ilfracombe finally took the win in game 6 to take the overall match win.

So the Sheelah Creasy Bowl finalists this year are Wrangaton and Ilfracombe who will face each other at Churston Golf Club on 30th September.  Semi-finalist trophies were presented to Lady Captain Maxine for Teignmouth and Team Captain Vera for Honiton.

My thanks to Yelverton staff who helped with the planning and, on the day, to the greens staff and Pro Shop staff and particularly Tim and the bar/catering staff who looked after us so well. Special thanks to Lady Captain Julia for her warm welcome and to her ladies who braved the elements to ball spot. My thanks also go to DevonGolf Vice President Pam St Leger for starting all the matches and to Peter Holt who spent the day out on a buggy as referee - armed with a klaxon in case the storm arrived.

The President’s Trophy semi finals were held at Holsworthy Golf Club on Friday, 9th September, on a blustery day with heavy rain forecast. It was a grey, drizzly day to match the sombre mood in the clubhouse following the death of HM The Queen the previous afternoon.

The first match was between Okehampton and Ilfracombe with Ilfracombe missing several of their regular players. Okehampton were the stronger side on paper, giving many shots to Ilfracombe and they proved the stronger on the course. The first two games both went down the 19th – Stacey Bale of Okehampton winning game 1, with extra reason to celebrate as it was her birthday. Janet Phillips of Ilfracombe won game 2 on the 19th after a valiant effort by Marcia Collett of Okehampton who had to give her 11 shots. Games 3-7 all then went Okehampton’s way and they secured their place in the final.

Match 2 was between East Devon 1 and Tavistock 1 and this was a much more even contest in terms of handicaps. It was a very competitive, exciting match with wins coming in for both sides. Game 2 was eventually declared a half between Leslie Dawson of East Devon and Nicky Gawman of Tavistock on the 20th hole when East Devon secured a 4th game win by another team member to take them through to the final. The weather had finally turned for the last few games so it was a relief to all to get the match finished and return to the dry clubhouse and some lovely match meals.

Okehampton will play East Devon 1 in the President’s Trophy final. Semi-finalist trophies were presented to Lady Captain Evelyn for Ilfracombe and Team Captain Sue for Tavistock 1.

My thanks to Holsworthy Golf Club, to the staff, caterers, Lady Captain Lynda and the ladies who helped on the day, who all gave me and the teams a lovely welcome and really made the day special. My thanks also to David Smith and James Rowland for their help refereeing. My particular thanks go to DevonGolf President Geoff Green who did sterling work starting all the matches, presented the trophies and led us in a minute's silence in memory of Her Majesty.

Congratulations to all the ladies who took part and played some great, competitive golf in a very friendly atmosphere.
