Report from Jon Gynne, Seniors Team Manager

SWCGA Seniors Championship

The competition this year was held in Dorset at the Parkstone Golf Club. The course itself was presented in superb condition and the weather conditions ideal for golf, sunny with a gentle breeze. Given the conditions scoring on the first day proved difficult for all players resulting in the CSS going to 74 from a SSS of 71. The competitors selected to represent Devon all played well with Richard Ward returning a gross 75, the second best score on the day.

In the Team competition with the five counting scores for the Devon Team all in the seventies it gave Devon a lead after the first day of 9 shots over Wiltshire in second place, 11 shots over Dorset and 15 shots over Gloucester.

The conditions on second day proved to be very similar with the wind speeds being far less than that forecast. Once again those representing Devon played well with Richard Ward, Paul Vicary and Simon Waddington returning a gross 76s, the third best scores of the day against a CSS 73. With a combined score over the two days of 151 Richard Ward finished in 2nd position two shots behind the winner, Richard Wood from Gloucester on 149, with Paul Vicary a further two shots behind in 4th position on 153.

Once again in the Team competition each member of the Devon Team performed admirably with all counting scores not exceeding 80 and despite Gloucester returning all their scores in the seventies, the Devon Team held on to win by 9 shots and qualified for the National Finals at the Robin Hood Golf Club in October.
