SW Boys Championship 8th July

Report: SWCGA Boys Team Championship at Teignmouth, Wed 8th July 2015

Having had a few days to mull over what happened last Wednesday 8th July, I have to say, I thought the Devon boys did very well in having the same score as Dorset, but losing out on count back to come third. Wiltshire were worthy winners when you consider that they had 3 players in the top four places. They certainly seem to cope with the appalling conditions of wind and rain, particularly in the morning.

Devon had good performances from James Thompson, Tom Trowbridge and Sam Williams, with all three finishing in the top ten. The SSS for the course is 70, so when you consider the CSS went to 73 for both rounds, it gives you some idea of what difficult weather conditions with which the boys had to endure. Our preparation was good and we were all feeling quietly confident, but the weather was not as forecast and as I said earlier we did not master it as well as the winners.

After seeing our boys play in these conditions, I do feel we need to spend some time on selecting the right sort of shot to play, particularly into the wind. I was pleased to see two of our U16 squad enter this event as individuals, and do better than some of the
boys selected in the team. Well done to Sam Keyte and Harrison King.

In summing up, it was disappointing not to make the EG Boys County Finals, considering the time and effort that was put in by everyone, but as some of the boys still have another year in the U18s and with the progression of some of the U16s , I feel 2016 could be Devon's year.

Grahame Moore.
U18 & U16 Team Manager.
