Burnage wins England Golf's Scrutton Jug

Jake Burnage of Saunton Golf Club celebrated his 20th birthday last Sunday by finishing third in the prestigious amateur golf competition, the Berkshire Trophy.

Having still only played the game for four years, Jake found himself leading a vastly experienced field after an opening round of 67 on the Red Course. A second round of 74 on the trickier Blue Course dropped him down a few places, but closing rounds of 71 and 70 on the Red saw him secure a total of 6 under par and a third place finish in his first visit to the course and competition.

Three days later and Jake, who also recently represented Devon in the South West Counties week at Bristol & Clifton, was in action again after qualifying for The English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship, or The Brabazon Trophy as its commonly known. With an international field featuring 156 of the finest amateur golfers from around the world, an opening round of 76 at Notts Golf Club (Hollinwell) meant Jake faced an uphill task to make the cut after round 2. Despite not making too much progress early on in the second round, a run of four birdies in the last five holes saw him safely through to the last two days with a 2 under par round of 70. Another 76 in the third round effectively dropped him out of contention for the honours - and his final round wasn’t shaping up too well being 4 over par after six holes, but he then shot six under for the back nine to finish tied 27th overall.

However, as an unexpected bonus, his combined aggregate score for both competitions of 2 under par saw him presented with the Philip Scrutton Jug - a fine trophy that puts Jake’s name amongst some very esteemed company, including Sir Nick Faldo, ‘Sandy’ Lyle, Peter McEvoy, Andrew Oldcorn, Peter Baker, Gary Wolstenholme and Ross Fisher.

Jake said, “This is my first appearance in either competition and to see my name amongst those on the Scrutton Jug is quite surreal. I feel I’ve hit the ball really well in both events, but know that there’s lots to improve on. I’ll be working hard to do just that”

Well done Jake!
