DEVONGOLF
On a beautiful spring day, over the immaculately presented Dainton Park course, the Devon First Team hosted a Somerset team hungry for revenge for last year's mauling at Enmore Park. The morning foursomes began with a sea of birdies, with Ryan Pope and Harrison Greenberry continuing their fine form from the previous week's Amateur. 8 birdies ensured a 6+4 win and a chance to top up their sun tans. Dan Rosevear and Matt Wells followed them home shortly after, winning 4+3. But David Blick and Pete Lawrence, and then Sam Edwards and Leon Fricker, found it tougher going with Somerset hitting back with some fine play of their own. The morning session finished on the final green, when David Ashley holed from 10 foot for a half after a fine lag putt from Jimmy Mullen.
With the match finely poised at 2.5 -2.5 at lunch, Devon's strength in depth was called upon in the afternoon singles. The hosts started superbly, with only one match being down after 9 holes. Mullen (5+4), Pope(7+5), Greenberry(2+1), Ashley(2up) and Blick(5+3) all romped home, but despite Wells coming up against a birdie blitz, Fricker's 5+3 win sealed victory. With Rosevear, and then Lawrence (making a welcome return to the Devon fold after an absence of 20...ish years) being edged out on the 18th, it was left to the ever reliable Edwards to close out a fine 9.5 to 5.5 Devon victory on the last green.
A very impressive performance from the Devon team, and the perfect send off for South West Week in a fortnight. Many thanks to Dainton Park for being such great hosts.
