MARC IS SETTLING IN TO HIS NEW ROLE - U14 BOYS' TEAM MANAGER

What is it they say? Walk a mile in my shoes…. If we let our volunteers walk that first mile in their predecessor’s shoes, I’m not sure they’d sign up for the job. But there are some good people out there and DevonGolf is run by them. Volunteers all!

“What does DevonGolf do for me?” is a question often asked. The answer lies in people like Marc Mulligan who has taken over managing the U14 Boys’ Team earlier this year.

Marc Mulligan

Think of DevonGolf like your own golf club. You probably have a Juniors’ Organiser and committee. Well, DevonGolf is utilising Thurlestone Golf Club’s Junior Committee member Marc - and his expertise is our U14s gain.

Marc is Devon born, as is his wife Laura, both growing up in the South Hams. Marc started playing golf when he was 18, reaching the dizzy heights of a 17 handicap. Marc’s main sporting interest was swimming which he did to district standard, before taking up water polo at which he reached national standard. Marc has always been aware of the adults who gave up much of their time to support him and now he has 2 sons, Noah and Aiden who are passionate about golf, Marc is giving his time and expertise back to sport.

Marc’s wife, Laura, is a very supportive mum but not one who is content to watch from the side lines. She, too, was a swimmer to a national standard so the dedication required to reach a high sporting level is in the Mulligan family’s DNA.

Marc is already looking to the future and building up the U14s squad after a strong contingent from the U14s moved to the U16s earlier in the season. Working alongside DevonGolf’s Coaching Coordinator Mark Sangster who manages the U16s, Marc is looking at lads involved with the Futures Programme, keeping an eye out for forthcoming talent coming through with a keen eye on performances in the DevonGolf Order of Merit events. There are some great players already in the U14s Elite Squad who won’t be moving immediately to the U16s, so the future is bright. Marc’s son Aiden, now aged 8, plays off a handicap of 26 and Noah, aged 11, already has a handicap of 7. They are lucky boys to have two parents who know what it takes to get ahead in a sport, but both Marc and Laura want Aiden and Noah to develop their skills whilst maintaining their passion - a philosophy that Marc is nurturing across the Junior Boys’ Squad. Other boys in the U14s have handicaps ranging from 6 to 27 Some of these boys have come through the Futures Programme – and are usually identified by their clubs to go through this process.  Most juniors that move into the U14s County Squad and Team will be playing regularly in the numerous Junior Opens that take place not just in Devon but across the region, and of course it is both Mark and Marc’s philosophy to see how all the Juniors are performing in the County Order of Merit events. The County Order of Merit events can be found on the DevonGolf website and usually cost £6-£10 to enter.
