East Devon Golf Club was the perfect stage for this year’s Devon County Veteran Ladies' Golf Association (DCVLGA) and Under-18 Girls fixture, hosted by 2025 DCVLGA Captain, Deirdre Mackness, at her home club. Despite a blustery breeze, the sun shone on a day filled with camaraderie, competition and community spirit.
In a break from tradition, the usual matchplay setup—where the Girls teed up against the Lady Vets—was replaced with a new team format. Seven four-ball teams were formed, each pairing two Lady Vets with two Girls. The team score on each hole combined the best Vet’s score and the best Girl’s score, creating a fun and inclusive twist on the competition.
Handicaps ranged widely, from 0.6 HI to 28.8, showcasing the diversity of players. In total, 17 clubs from across Devon were proudly represented—an impressive turnout that highlighted the depth of golfing talent across the county.
After play, everyone gathered in the clubhouse for a well-deserved carvery lunch, where stories and laughter flowed as freely as the coffee. Deirdre presented the day’s results and prizes on behalf of the Lady Vets, capping off a wonderful afternoon.
Susie Carr, the Girls’ Team Captain, expressed heartfelt thanks to East Devon Golf Club for their hospitality, the greens staff for the beautifully presented course, and the clubhouse team for their superb catering. She also extended sincere appreciation to the Lady Vets for their generous £350 donation to the Girls’ Development Squad—a gesture warmly received by all.
This annual fixture continues to be a highlight of the Devon golf calendar, bringing together different generations of players. The new format was a clear hit, making the event even more sociable and fun. The chatter and laughter echoing through the clubhouse was proof that golf truly is a game to be shared and enjoyed across the decades.
