THE PRESIDENT'S TROPHY SEMI-FINALS 2025

Boringdon Park was the setting for the President’s Trophy semi-finals this year on a bright but very breezy day adding an extra challenge for the teams. The recent rain meant the course was starting to green up but had made the bunkers more of a challenge than usual.

The first match was between Staddon Heights and Tavistock 2 and this proved to be a real battle. Tavistock ladies Fiona Lovell and Belinda McSherry took the first two wins, followed by an early win for Jane Burley-Brown of Staddon Heights. The fourth result was a win for Claire Mundell of Tavistock meaning they only needed one more game win to take the match. The momentum then seemed to switch Staddon’s way as Kate Ball and Julie Bacon won their games to make three games apiece for each team, leaving game 7 as the decider. Staddon’s Sue Jolly and Tavistock’s Margaret Smith had a very tight match and were still all square after 18 holes so the game continued on the 19th. Margaret took the hole to win the game 1-up, giving her Tavistock team the overall match win.

The second semi-final was between Tiverton and Thurlestone. The first result in was from game 7, a win for Tiverton’s Janet Webber. The second result was a win for Sarah Loader of Thurlestone in game 1. The Tiverton ladies then had a run of success with wins for Ali Menheneott, Lizzie Bowman and Maureen Postles to give them the 4 game wins needed to take the match. Meanwhile, the second game between Clare Benson of Tiverton and Bridget Lafferty of Thurlestone had teed off on their 19th hole before being called in, along with game 6 between Marion Ruffett and Claire Guard.

Congratulations to Tavistock 2 and Tiverton who will now meet in the President’s Trophy Final at Okehampton Golf Club on 26th September, alongside the Still Cup,  Tavistock 2 Creasy and Doris Willis-Little finals. All supporters are most welcome.

Boringdon Park Lady Captain Chris presented semi-finalist trophies to Staddon Heights’ Team Captain Lesley Brooks and Thurlestone’s Team Captain Pam Adams. Congratulations to both teams for reaching this stage of the competition, a fantastic achievement.

My thanks to Boringdon Park Golf Club for hosting us – to Scott and the Pro Shop team, to the Greens Staff who had presented the course so well and were still working hard to repair rain damaged bunkers, and to the bar and catering team for looking after us so well and providing some lovely match meals. My very special thanks go to Lady Captain Chris who had organised so much help for me and the teams, including the lovely treat of refreshments out on the course. Thanks to Pat who acted as starter, sending the teams off with instructions and encouragement and to the other Boringdon ladies who gave up their time to ball-spot which really helped the day run smoothly.

As always, my thanks to the DevonGolf referees Terry Hembrow and Nigel Roy who did an excellent job keeping the matches on time, giving rulings and keeping me updated with results.
