After a week of heavy rain, the forecast was not great for the Senior's Stableford Championship at Bigbury Golf Club. 77 players from 19 clubs from right across the county had signed up to play as a blustery wind blew off the sea which definitely took its toll on some of the scores.
Nigel Stanbury, in a Bring Your Husband to Work Day, was the starter for the first half until Bigbury member Mary Wilcox took over. Their help was much appreciated, as was the support from the office, greens and catering staff who helped make the day the fabulous event it was.
Only 7 cards had been handed in before the first 40 points from Keith Hoskins (14 - Downes Crediton) topped the leader-board. It was Keith's first county competition, having been under the mistaken impression that DevonGolf competitions were only for single figure players. Close behind Keith with 37 points was fellow club mate Andy Rogers (5) who had persuaded Keith to enter. Both, quite rightly, felt quite happy with their scores and it was a long wait for them until the trophy presentations. It took another 25 cards to be handed in before Tim Aggett (2 - Warren) carded 37 points to push Andy Rogers down a spot. Now it was getting interesting. In came more cards but there was no threat to the top until Andy Wilson (12 - Royal North Devon) also came in with 37 points. Countback was going to be crucial. But, as often happens, just when you think it's all over, James Lang (17 - Teignmouth) posted 40 points right at the very end to give him the top spot and the Veterans' Nett Challenge Cup. To add to his delight, his score also won him the Pensioners' Plate for the 65+ nett category.
There were also 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes for the gross stableford scores and Tim Aggett took the Bert Hudson Trophy, having also won it in 2024.
