STILL CUP SEMI-FINALS - TIVERTON GOLF CLUB

Waterproofs and umbrellas were much needed for the Still Cup semi-finals at Tiverton Golf Club as the teams gathered for a day of quality scratch matchplay – 7 singles games.  After the dry spell the weather had definitely turned. The earlier games had to deal with a stiff breeze and torrential rain on and off until the sun finally came out.

The first semi-final was between Torquay and East Devon. East Devon players Sophie Page and Alison Corney took the first game wins but Torquay hit back with wins for Charlotte Dommett, Jenny Rhodes and Laura Colman.  Dawn Cottam then won her game to give Torquay the 4 wins they needed to take the match. East Devon’s Jenny Dobel was up in game 7 when it was called in.

Teignmouth played Saunton in the second semi-final which proved very exciting. Susie Carr led the way with the first win for Teignmouth, followed by another courtesy of Hannah Reynolds.  Julie Brookes and Jayne Begley followed with game wins for Saunton. Lorna Elliott won her game for Teignmouth and game 7 looked likely to be a win for Saunton’s Julie Rotchell, which meant the deciding game was actually the third one out between the experienced pair of Teignmouth's Vicky Holloway and Saunton's Sally Charnock. The game was very close and was eventually decided on the 18th with a win for Vicky to give Teignmouth the 4 wins needed for the match victory.

It was a very exciting day in what was, at times, very challenging conditions. The players rose to the occasion and we saw some really excellent golf.  Torquay will now meet Teignmouth on Finals Day at Okehampton.

When all the teams were back in the clubhouse, Tiverton Lady Captain Lynne Veen welcomed everyone before we presented the semi-finalist trophies to East Devon Lady Team Captain Liz Connelly and Saunton’s Team Captain Julie Rotchell. Huge congratulations to both teams for reaching this stage of the competition.

My thanks go to Tiverton Golf Club for hosting the day, to Robin in the office for his help with planning and, on the day, to the Pro Shop and the Greens Staff who worked hard to mend the bunkers after the torrential rain. The catering staff who did a great job keeping us all fed and watered and provided delicious match meals. Special thanks to Lady Captain Lynne for such a warm welcome and for acting as starter for the first match, ably assisted by the lovely William. My grateful thanks also to the referees Terry Hembrow and Nigel Roy.
