PALAIRET MIXED GREENSOMES - THURLESTONE GOLF CLUB

Thurlestone Golf Club hosted 96 players from 22 different clubs from across the county for the Palairet Mixed Greensomes. This is always a popular event and, as well as the magnificent trophy, players were playing for 1st-6th place nett Stableford and 1st & 2nd gross Stableford.

Early nett scores were mid-30s at best until Emily Coombes & Michael McLeod posted 42 points. After that, normal service resumed with no scores higher than 38 points to threaten them. But the rain passed through and the later players reaped the benefit. It all happened in the last few tee times when a threatening 41 points from the pairings of Paul Newcombe & Sue Burley (East Devon) and Julie Bacon (Staddon Heights) & Raymond Dixon (Boringdon Park) came in before the Holsworthy players tried to claim the competition as their own.

Often runner up for the gross prize, Emily Coombes yet again had to settle for gross 2nd place but, for the first time, lifted the Devon County Golf Union Challenge Cup originally presented by L.E.H. Palairet Esq in 1935.
