Oake Manor Golf Club was this year’s venue for the South West Girls’ County Championships. This competition sees the very best from the South West counties compete for gross & nett prizes in 3 different age categories, as well as a best overall and nett winner.
The girls were seeded in handicap order with the higher handicappers going out first, with playing handicaps on the day ranging from 2 up to 30.
There were plenty of officials helping out on the day to ensure the girls were kept hydrated in the very hot weather.
The Best Nett Score went to Devon’s Isla Schofield (Woodbury Park) who posted a truly incredible gross score of 73, nett 58. This wonderful score meant Isla cleaned up in nearly every age category as she was only 13 at the start of the year. Isla took home the Best Nett Overall, Best Nett Under 18, Best Gross Under 16, Best Nett Under 16, Best Gross Under 14 and Best Nett Under 14. She also won the Buchanan Trophy which is an Under 14s Stableford that runs alongside the main competition.
Isla did leave one prize for someone else though. The Best Gross Score of the Day was recorded by Susie Carr (Teignmouth). Susie did it in fantastic style by shooting an impressive 2-under par round 69 - and posting a new course record for Oake Manor Golf Club in the process. What an incredible achievement.
Freya Goddard from Royal North Devon, another Devon Girls’ Squad member, put in a strong performance to finish 5th overall in the Nett competition with a nett 66, taking home the voucher for Best Nett Under 16. Sothea Kasparis (Torquay) shot under handicap with a great nett 67 and Emily Goddard scored a nett 72 (par 71).
Not surprisingly such great individual scoring resulted in Devon taking the Best Gross County Team prize too with Susie’s 69, Isla’s 73 combining with Churston's Belle Tarr scoring 79 to give a combined gross total of 221, 8 over gross and 6 shots clear of the next highest scoring county - Somerset.
So, it was a clean sweep for Devon on the day!!
Unfortunately, though, there was a bit of a mix up with the results meaning the Devon girls didn't receive all their prizes on the day, but they finally got their hands on them at Broadstone Golf Club when the girls met for South West Girls’ Inter-Counties Championship (which they also won!).
Huge thanks should go to our County Coaches Jon Axford (Teignmouth) & Jess Smart (Saunton) for all the support and guidance they give the girls throughout the year which make these amazing results possible.
