SHEELAH CREASY BOWL QUARTER-FINALS - TORQUAY GOLF CLUB
The Sheelah Creasy Bowl Quarter-Finals was held at Torquay Golf Club this year with 8 teams ready to do battle on this challenging course.
The first match out was Teignmouth v Bovey Tracey. Charlotte Gough won the first game for Teignmouth but then the Bovey ladies brought 3 wins home to take the match – singles players Jane Hodgson and Alison Penwell, and the Greensomes team of Jenny Pennell and Sue Adams. The second Greensomes game between Teignmouth’s Surya Patterson & Maxine Anderson and Bovey’s Sallie Malt & Jane Barter was all square after 16 holes when it was called in.
The second match was between Dainton Park and the Warren ladies. Warren player Teresa Barrett won the first game on the 19th hole against Dainton’s Wendy Roberts, followed by another Warren game win for Trish Wallis. Sue Elson of Dainton Park won game 3 but Yvonne Alford and Bernadette Maynard won game 4 to take the match win for the Warren. The final Greensomes game between Janice Eaton & Janet Pratley of Dainton and Warren ladies Cherry Ziell & Eve Andrews was all square on the 18th hole when it was called in.
The third quarter-final was between Honiton and Exeter. Exeter’s Louise James won the first singles game followed by a Honiton win for Andrea Milton and another Exeter win for Paula Cowl. The second Greensomes game was won for Honiton by Jo Donmall & Pat Greenfield which made two games apiece and the first Greensomes game was the decider – it was won by Honiton pair Liz Rogers & Karen Whiteside on the 19th hole against Exeter’s Jenny Garner & Jane Scoble.
The final match was Tiverton v Sidmouth. Liz Chance won the first game for Sidmouth, followed by two singles wins for Tiverton’s Julie Lewis and Kay Leach. As in the third quarter-final the second Greensomes result came next and was a win for the Sidmouth pair of Yvonne Anning & Diane Boyden, leaving the first Greensomes game to be the match decider. The Tiverton pair of Julia Cole & Kelly Foster and the Sidmouth pair of Anne Blackler & Gill Johnson were all square after 18 so headed down the 19th. That hole was also halved, as was the 20th, and the game win finally came on the 21st hole for Sidmouth to give them the match.
The winners will now face each other in the semi-finals on 5th September at Yelverton Golf Club and Bovey Tracey will play the Warren ladies and Sidmouth will play Honiton.
My thanks to our host club Torquay Golf Club and Laura Colman who helped with the planning. Lady Captain Sally Spokes and her ladies who were so welcoming to the teams and did a great job ball spotting to help make the day go smoothly. Thanks to General Manager Craig, the Greens Staff and to Mike and the bar and catering staff who looked after everyone so well and provided some excellent match meals. My thanks to the referees Terry Hembrow and Nigel Roy and many thanks also go to Vicky Holloway who did sterling work as the starter.
Congratulations to all the ladies who took part, it was a really competitive day with a lot of tight matches but all played in a very friendly atmosphere.
