80 women had signed up for the Western Morning News Foursomes (N&E) at a very fine looking Libbaton Golf Club. It's a two-fold competition with clubs able to nominate 3 pairs to win the trophy for their club, 2 out of 3 scores to count, plus the opportunity to win the Foursomes Stableford as a pair with prizes from 1st to 6th place.
Joint Lady Captains Pauline Baker and Kay Elworthy had arranged everything down to the finest details. Players were treated like VIPs with car parking attendants, ball spotters and Jim as the starter - down to beautiful flowers in the clubhouse in Devon Women's team colours.
Pauline, with partner Bee Baker, was the first to tee off with playing partners Susan Williams & Sheila Tallon from Sidmouth. Pauline & Bee's very respectable score of 38 set the pace for a good while and gave their nominated team an equally good start. As the scores came in, it was a mixture of some good and some not so good..... but all the ladies had enjoyed the course if not the Foursomes format.
All eyes were on the live leaderboard to see which club would win the coveted Western Morning News Trophy which was donated by the newspaper in 1936. Carol Rockey & Linda Green (Great Torrington) scored 39 points early on which, added to Liz Thompson & Emily Green's 35, kept Great Torrington in the lead with 74 points for most of the afternoon. But the Portmore golfers were further down the start sheet and when Sandra Kirk & Jo Lethaby handed in a card with 40 points to add to Amanda Webber & Deb Moon's 38 points, the trophy was decided.
