DEVON GOLF
MEN'S SOUTH WEST OF ENGLAND MID-AMATEUR AT ROYAL NORTH DEVON
It was an early start to get 51 golfers, one from as far afield as Rye Golf Club in East Sussex, around 36-holes at Royal North Devon Golf Club. The weather was benign for the first round of the Mens' South West of England Mid-Amateur (over 35) competition for the Dartmoor Trophy but the wind definitely came into play in round 2.
After round 1 Daniel Owen from Mendip Golf Club came in at the end of the field with a gross 68, 2 ahead of Dartmouth's Lee Marels' round of 70. Tiverton's Richard Ackland and Neil James (RND) shot gross 71, David Turnbull (Tavistock) a 72 and Tom Woodhouse (East Devon), Colin Curtis (Taunton & Pickeridge) and David Holyoak (Saunton) were all on 73. Hopes were high for round 2.
Three Cornwall players had crossed the Tamar, playing early in the field. The second round scores of Lawrie Tremlett and Graham Webb (both Trevose), swiftly followed by James Chappell from Saunton, meant the live leaderboard was showing a 3-way time with total scores of 145 (+1). Each had made impressive improvements on their first rounds, Lawrie by 5 shots, Graham by 7 and James an 11 shot improvement. Could any of the others in the top 10 from round 1 cause further upset? It was an anxious wait as one by one the likely players from the large field came in and the 3-way tie remained, until there was only Daniel Owen with his first round score of 68 who was likely to change things. And he did! As the last player in the field came in with a round 2 score of 71 for a total of 139 (-5). Congratulations Daniel.

Nichalas Baker (Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire) was on fire with three 2s, Justin Lane (Burnham & Berrow) had two 2s and Piers Parnell (Rye), Curtis Edwards (Taunton & Pickeridge), Richard Martin (Saunton), Neil Holland (Sidmouth), Ben Schlater (Warren), Alastair Jack (Exeter), Andrew Norman (Saunton) and David Turnbull (Tavistock) all had one.
