Stover Golf Club was looking very fine for the Devon Salver, a 36-hole competition for men and women. With scratch and nett prizes for both genders and the Brockman Trophy for the U22 men's scratch winner it was a busy day.
With playing handicaps as low as -4 there was always going to be some stunning golf. With Stover's new layout a first trip out for some, there were a few less than flattering scores too. After 18-holes last year's winner of the Devon Salver, James Pickard from East Devon was in the lead with 69, just 1 shot ahead of Teignmouth's Leigh Jones. Not far behind, all with gross 73, were Lee Marels (Dartmouth), Thomas Simpson (Churston), Scott Pym (Torquay) and Chris Greenberry (Stover).
Having endured a short but fulsome shower of rain in the morning, everyone stayed dry for the afternoon's round which saw Leigh Jones shoot a 69, 1 better than his morning round, for a 139 total to win the Devon Salver. Thomas Simpson (Churston) and Archie Christophers (Stover) shot 72 and Matt Curnoe (Churston) a 73. The top 5 scratch winners were:
Player | Club | Round 1 | Round 2 | Total |
Leigh Jones | Teignmouth | 70 | 69 | 139 |
James Pickard | East Devon | 69 | 74 | 143 |
Thomas Simpson | Churston | 73 | 72 | 145 |
Scott Pym | Torquay | 73 | 74 | 147 |
Lee Marels | Dartmouth | 73 | 75 | 148 |
Leigh Jones (-2) also took the Men's Nett prize with nett 72 and 71 for a nett 143.
