DEVON GIRLS - DAY 1 AT SOUTH WEST GIRLS' INTER-COUNTIES

Day 1
Cumberwell Park Golf Club is simply a fantastic venue for such an important competition. Thanks to this great club and Wiltshire Golf for hosting and running this event for 2024.

Hannah Stephens is the DevonGolf Girls' U18s Team Manager and working alongside Jon Axford as the county girls' coach they have been preparing a young team to meet some of the South West's finest young golfers. First up in the morning for Devon v Gloucestershire, a formidable county team indeed, was Georgia Denega (Churston) and rookie Tomassina Miali (Saunton). Seemingly with no nerves on display, they halved their match from all square after 9 holes. Edith Morris (Churston) & Olivia Howard (Stover) lost 4 down to their strong opponents, Taylor Hodgson & Frances Sullivan. In the singles Devon Captain Susie Carr (Teignmouth) played +2 Mariella Buchanan whose faultless play meant a 5&4 loss for Devon. Belle Tarr (Churston) played Rosie Boyle and lost 2 down. Chloe MacPherson (Saunton) was playing in the last singles match and, with her usual quiet demeanour, brought home a win. It was 3½-1½ win for Gloucestershire but some huge positives to take away for the afternoon for Devon.

The Lunchtime Motivational Talk from Coach Jon

The afternoon's match was against Wiltshire. Hannah & Jon discussed the team selection and first up in the Foursomes for Devon was Isla Schofield (Woodbury Park) & Susie Carr (Teignmouth). They had a tough game against on-form Emily Grimshaw & Lauren Cowley to lose 4&2. Fresh from their halved match in the morning, Georgia & Tommasina thoroughly enjoyed themselves and brought home a 5&3 win. Belle was first out in the singles and battled with her putting against Wiltshire's Poppy Norcott, never quite getting the upper hand in the match. All square on 15, both girls played great tee shots onto the 16th green. Belle sunk the most enormous putt to go 1 up. The 17th was halved and they set off up the 18th. Poppy's second shot was in the bunker, Belle's at the back of the green and the match finished with Belle winning by 2 holes. Devon were getting excited. Edith quietly went about her work and had a stunning win 5&3 and, not to be outdone, Chloe gave Devon her second win of the day 4&3.

The Devon blue colours were all over the course today and the supporters were fantastic. Thanks to everyone who came to cheer the girls on - it makes a difference.

At the end of Day 1, Devon are lying in second place and the scores are:
