WESTERN MORNING NEWS FOURSOMES - NORTH AND EAST - HONITON GOLF CLUB

The course at Honiton Golf Club was looking beautiful. Green, lush and, as it turned out, very fast on the greens. 84 women, 42 pairs from 13 clubs across the north and east regions of the county were eager and ready to play for the Western Morning News Foursomes - North & East. DevonGolf is very grateful to Honiton Golf Club members and staff for hosting this event and thanks to Honiton member Ann Desmoulins for acting as starter and ensuring everyone had a good day.

Foursomes is not a favourite format among many but the sun and gorgeous looking course meant the ladies were raring to go. It was Foursomes Stableford, not Foursomes Medal, much to the relief of many.

Western Morning News Trophy - North & East

Nearly everyone declared they didn't stand a chance but were doing it anyway. Each club can enter as many pairs as they like with prizes from 1st to 7th place. Any club with more than 3 entries has to nominate a team of 3 pairs, of which the best 2 team scores will count towards winning the magnificent Western Morning News Trophy which was donated by that paper in 1936. With first prize of £100 to the winning pair, there was much to play for.

Scores were variable but 39 points from the canny Ilfracombe pairing of Jean Wills and Pennie Richards coming through quite late in the field secured 1st place. With only two teams entered, all eyes were glued to the leaderboard trying to work out who had won the team prize. Ilfracombe's late replacements of Amanda Jane Melangrani and Janet Pollard, who declared they were only there to make up the numbers, had scored 38 points. Up to that point, East Devon's teams of Judy Murray & Maureen Reynolds (37 points), Jenny Dobel & Sarah Jones (34 points) and Sue Loynes & Judith Page (27 points) had held the lead with 71 points after discarding Sue & Judith's score.

It was a tense wait to see the final team scores but Ilfracombe were unbeatable with their 77 points total. East Devon's 71 points held second place but there's only one trophy.

Individually, though, East Devon were not disappointed and were in the prizes.
