SHEELAH CREASY BOWL SEMI-FINALS 2023

The Sheelah Creasy Bowl semi-finals were held on Monday, 4th September at Portmore Golf Club, on a very hot, breezy day which added to the challenge the women faced on the course. DevonGolf President Pam St Leger was on the first tee to get the matches underway.

The first sem-final was between Tiverton 1 and Bovey Tracey. Bovey Tracey’s Jenny Pennell and Sue Adams won the first game but this was followed by wins for Tiverton from Christine Twose and Carol Rooker, Marg Sampson and Alison Frankfurt which meant the match win went to Tiverton.

East Devon played Saunton in the second semi-final. The Saunton pairing of Jenny Kirley and Liz Fielder won the first game, followed by another win for Saunton in game 3 courtesy of Pauline Sparkes and Pauline Barrow. The 2 game wins secured the match for Saunton and the remaining game was called in, having been all square at the time.

Once all the teams were back in the clubhouse, the trophy presentation was held, beginning with handing out a a semi-finalist trophy for the Doris Willes-Little Foursomes competition to the Portmore pairing of Amanda Webber and Alison West who were beaten by Thurlestone. Thurlestone go forward to play Wrangaton in the final, having beaten Holsworthy in the semi-final. Pam then gave the Sheelah Creasy Bowl semi-finalist trophies to Alison Penwell, Lady Captain of Bovey Tracey, and Eilidh Cameron, Vice-Captain of East Devon. Our congratulations to all the semi-finalist players for reaching so far in the competitions.

The Sheelah Creasy Bowl finalists for 2023 are Tiverton 1 and Saunton, congratulations to both teams on such a fantastic achievement. As the Inter-Club Finals Day is being hosted by Tiverton this year, we are holding the Sheelah Creasy Bowl final at Downes Crediton Golf Club on the morning of 29th September. Both teams will then travel up to Tiverton Golf Club to take part in the main trophy presentation.

My thanks to our host club Portmore, to Kirsty for her help with planning and to Mandy and Jo on the day and we were all particularly grateful for the cold drinks delivered to the half way house. Thanks also to the greens staff and the bar and kitchen staff for looking after us so well. My thanks, as always, to the referees Terry Hembrow and Nigel Roy.

Congratulations to all the women who took part and coped so well in the very hot and dusty conditions on the day, it was a real feat of endurance.

Rosie Burnham
Women’s Inter-Club Match Secretary
