SENIORS' CHANNEL LEAGUE v CORNWALL - ST ENODOC

It was an unexpected treat for the DevonGolf Seniors’ side to find themselves at St Enodoc Golf Club for the Seniors' Channel League fixture against the 'old enemy' Cornwall. The opportunity to play one of the best courses in the land was much appreciated and the players responded to their surroundings

On a breezy but beautiful Cornish morning the Greensomes session set out with St Enodoc Chairman Martin Trees marshalling. The plan was to play holes 1 to 7 and 17 & 18. Warren’s Chris Audin and RND’s Simon Waddington halved the first match against Mark Blaber (Carlyon Bay) and Richard Jones (Bowood Park) but, by their own admission, weren’t quite sure how. Tim Aggett (Warren) holed a vital 6-footer to secure a 1 up win with club mate Jez Binch over Simon Knowles (Perranporth) and Andy Rowe (Looe). Following behind, Rick Osborne (Churston) and Andy Clark (Honiton) produced an excellent 2-1 win over the Trevose pairing of Guy Norris and Gary Hawking.

Cornwall got a win on the board with the Lanhydrock duo of Gary Stone and Colin Willis getting the upper hand on Tony Allsopp (Tiverton) and Tim Jones (Warren) at the final hole. The dependable combination of Mark Evans (RND) and Dave Eva (Thurlestone) came up with a 2-1 win in the final game over Steve Barns of West Cornwall and China Fleet’s Colin Kitt. Devon were up 3½ to 1½ at lunch.

Devon roared away in the afternoon singles. After Aggett halved with Blaber there were wins for Evans over a very out of sorts Jones. Audin beat Trees (slightly surprisingly substituting for Rowe) and Binch just about held on to defeat Knowles on the final green. Clark halved with Norris and Waddington defeated Hawking at the 17th.

The next three games all went Cornwall’s way, Stone beating Osborne 3-2, Willis overcoming Jones 2-1 and Kitt defeating Allsopp at the last. Eva won the last match 2-1 over Barns to secure Devon a 6-4 afternoon win and 9½ to 5½ overall victory.
