STILL CUP SEMI FINALS – TAVISTOCK GOLF CLUB – 24th AUGUST 2023

It was a lovely day on the moors for the Still Cup Semi-Finals at Tavistock Golf Club as the teams gathered for an afternoon of quality scratch matchplay. DevonGolf President Pam St Leger was on the first tee to see all the players and caddies tee off.

The first semi-final was between East Devon and Okehampton.  East Devon players Sarah Owen-Pawson, Helen Chivers and Eilidh Cameron did sterling work in the last three games of the match with some big wins but the first four games went to Okehampton to secure the match, courtesy of Abby Turner, Frances Harbron, Stacey Bale and Marcia Collett.

Saunton played Torquay in the second semi-final.  The first two games went Torquay’s way courtesy of Charlotte Dommett and Vicky Holloway. Three big wins then went to Saunton players Helena Standen, Julie Brookes and Jayne Begley. The fourth game win needed by Saunton to take the match was won by Sally Charnock on the 19th green, immediately followed by another Saunton win for Sarah Watts.

It was a very exciting afternoon and it would be fair to say that the end result was not as many expected - East Devon and Torquay have been very dominant in the Still Cup over the last few years.  Okehampton and Saunton really proved the stronger teams on this occasion and move on to play each other in the Still Cup Final on 29th September.

When all the teams were back in the clubhouse, Tavistock Lady Captain June Kendall welcomed everyone before the semi-finalist trophies were presented to East Devon Lady Team Captain Anne Serle and Torquay Lady Captain Sue Arnold, together with her daughter Laura Colman who is her Vice-Captain and Still Cup Team Captain. Huge congratulations to both teams for reaching this stage of the competition.

My thanks go to Tavistock Golf Club for hosting the day, to Cameron in the office for his help with planning, to the Greens Staff and the Pro Shop and to the catering staff who worked hard to keep us all fed and watered. Special thanks to Lady Captain June for such a warm welcome and the beautiful flowers for the trophy table and to her team for their invaluable help with ball spotting. My grateful thanks also to Pam St Leger and to the referees Terry Hembrow and Nigel Roy.
