WOMEN'S WESTERN MORNING NEWS CUP - NORTH & EAST
This year it was the turn of Okehampton Golf Club to host the yearly Foursomes Stableford event for the clubs in the North and East divisions of the county. As many pairs as a club wishes to send may enter this competition to win the monetary prizes. But play is also for the Western Morning News Cup which was given to the Devon County Ladies' Golf Association in 1936. To win this lovely trophy requires the Women's Captain to nominate 3 pairs from her club (unbeknown to the pairings she has picked) and the best aggregate of 2 of the 3 scores count to win the trophy. If a club only has 2 pairings entered then they could still win the trophy, but it's a slightly tougher ask.
The weather was its usual unpredictable self for this summer and, although the day was forecast to be cloudy, the early starters got quite a drenching.
A big thank you must go to Okehampton Golf Club for all their help. Club Secretary Bev and Lady Captain Di Johnson pulled out all the stops in true Okehampton fashion. Di kindly did all the starting and the presentation of cups and prizes. Bev was on hand all day. The catering team worked hard, keeping competitors watered and fed whilst the Pro Shop ran the 2s competition. Finally, the green keepers are to be congratulated for the condition of the course with the renowned topiary of Okehampton Golf Club greens providing their usual challenge!
The home club pairing of Penny Deakin and Sue Stanbury were the individual winners of the Foursomes Stableford with a magnificent 40 points.
The Western Morning News Cup was won by Okehampton Golf Club with their team made up from pairings of Penny and Sue, Marcia Collett and Elaine Marwood, and Sue Williams and Maggie Caws, with the best aggregate of 2 of the 3 nominated pairs scores totalling 77 points.
