PRESIDENT’S TROPHY QUARTER FINALS 2023

The President’s Trophy Quarter Finals were held at Yelverton Golf Club on Monday 14th August on a day that started out very misty and quite chilly but later turned into a lovely warm day. The course was in great condition, giving the ladies a great challenge, with the ponies and sheep grazing across the course adding to the mix.

The first quarter final was between Staddon Heights and Okehampton. The first result for the day was in game 7 for Cherry James of Okehampton with a 7&6 win. Okehampton’s Stacey Bale then took the first game with a 5&3 win, followed by a win for Marcia Collett in game 2. Jane Burley-Brown and Penny Howson won in games 3 and 4 for Staddon Heights but Maggie Caws won for Okehampton in game 5 meaning the overall match win went to Okehampton.

Match 2 was between Downes Crediton and Bigbury. Amanda Burchell got the first win for Bigbury with a 7&6 result in game 2. Downes Crediton’s Tracey Chandler, Angela Storey and Sue Jackson won in games 1, 6 and 7, with Cathy Harrington winning for Bigbury in game 5. Games 3 and 4 both went on past 18 holes with Bigbury needing wins in both to secure the match. After a tense wait for the ladies who had finished their matches, Bigbury players Karen Graddon won on the 20th and Jane Rickman won on the 22nd hole.  A well-deserved match win for Bigbury with special credit also due to Downes Crediton ladies Rebecca Aven and Anne Woodger who kept their matches going for so long.

Match 3 was between East Devon 1 and Royal North Devon. Rosemary Pratt, Nina Hawkins and Anne Serle won games 3, 4 & 6 for East Devon but RND were stronger on the day with wins in games 1, 2, 5 & 7 for Sahara Stockwell, Victoria Wheatley, Ruth Horn and Trish Jordan. Special mention to Ruth and her opponent Sarah Jones who took their game to the 20th.

The last quarter final was between Woodbury Park and Ilfracombe. Jean Wills of Ilfracombe lost on the last putt to Paula Lee from Woodbury, with another Woodbury win for Ellen Burchell on the 21st against Mandy Melaragni. Linda Holdway secured another Woodbury win in game 5 but Ilfracombe took the overall match with wins in games 3, 4, 6 and 7 for Janet Phillips, Evelyn Jones, Linda Barrington and Jacki Knight.

It was a very exciting day with some tremendous golf and a great atmosphere, a huge well done to all the players, ably assisted by their caddies.  Congratulations to the winners, who will meet at the Semi-Finals of the President’s Trophy taking place at Torquay Golf Club on Monday 11th September, with Royal North Devon playing Okehampton, and Bigbury playing Ilfracombe.
