Friday, 10th August marked the beginning of the knockout stages of the women’s inter-club competitions with the Sheelah Creasy Bowl Quarter Finals at Teign Valley Golf Club, played in a 4BBB format this year. A cloudy start turned into a sunny and very warm afternoon and the course gave the ladies a good challenge.

The first match out was Dainton Park against East Devon. There was a 6&4 win by Janet Lambert and Jane Ellen for East Devon in game 1 to start, Dainton Park’s Sue Elson and Lesley Singleton took game 2 but Sally Rex and Alison Price of East Devon won game 3 to win the overall match. Match 2 was between Tiverton 1 and Royal North Devon with an early 7&6 Tiverton game win by Carol Rooker and Christine Twose in game 3. Royal North Devon fought back with a win by Sandra Haslam and Lindy Sainsbury in game 1 before Tiverton’s Julia Cole and Alison Frankpitt took the second win in game 2 to secure the match.

The third quarter final was between Stover and Saunton with Saunton proving the stronger team on the day with wins from Jenny Kirley and Liz Fielder in game 1 and Pauline Sparkes and Pauline Barrow in game 3, meaning that game 2 could be called in. The last quarter final was between Bovey Tracey and Ilfracombe.  Bovey Tracey players Jenny Pennell and Sue Adams won game 1 followed by Ness O’Brien and Alison Penwell winning game 2 to take the match.

The winners will face each other in the semi finals on 4th September at Portmore Golf Club, the first match out will be Tiverton 1 v Bovey Tracey, followed by East Devon v Saunton.

My thanks to our host club Teign Valley, to David and Nicola for their help with planning and on the day, to the Pro Shop and Greens staff and the bar and kitchen staff.  Vice Captain Rosalind was a wonderful help to me at registration and also out ball-spotting with Teign Valley members, thank you all for your hard work which was a great help.  Thanks also to the referees Terry Hembrow, Nigel Roy and Lorna Brown, who also did sterling work acting as starter for the day.

Congratulations to all the ladies who took part and played some great golf in a very friendly atmosphere as always It was lovely to see familiar faces again, together with some ladies new to our inter-club knock-out stages.
