ORDER OF MERIT WINNERS CROWNED FOR 2022

It was a relatively small field of 19 golfers who gathered at Bovey Castle on Sunday for the final round of the DevonGolf Orders of Merit for 2022.

Of the three titles to be determined, one was already decided. Tim Aggett had acquired an unassailable lead in the Seniors' Scratch Order of Merit with 2 wins, including the double-point scoring Scratch Championship and a runner-up spot in his 5 counting events.

The remaining questions surrounded the Men’s Scratch and the Seniors' Handicap merit tables which would be decided on the day.

It was a day of very mixed scoring, even with the golf course really well presented for the event and the weather playing ball too as the players set off into glorious morning sunshine.

Best scores of the day came from East Devon’s Leigh Jones with 35 points, Dave Eva of Thurlestone with 34, moving both up in the Men’s and Senior’s Scratch tables respectively. Eva’s score was also best of the day for the Seniors' Handicap list. Ollie Tanton from Royal North Devon shot a nett 32 from his +2 handicap, his 34 gross points taking 2nd place in the men’s event on countback over Eva.

The Warren’s Dave Heaton had an admirable 31 to be 2nd in both the Seniors' Scratch and Handicap result on the day, with Tavistock’s Mark Taylor also 3rd in both.

The question marks surrounding the two unresolved merit tables were soon answered. Torquay’s Scott Pym came into the final leading the table from Warren’s James Allum. Pym came 4th, Allum 7th, so Scott is the DevonGolf 2022 Champion.

That left the Seniors' Handicap where only Stover’s Richard Pascoe could catch Aggett who led both tables going into the final event. Richard was 5th but Tim was 6th in the Handicap elements and thus held on to take both Orders of Merit. In his capacity as Director of Competitions Tim then also undertook the finalising and presentations after the event, taking the opportunity to also give those present an update on some of the plans for the Orders of Merit for 2023.
