DEVON SENIOR MEN CROWNED CHAMPIONS OF THE 2022 CHANNEL LEAGUE

With the abandonment of the last Seniors' Channel League game of the year which had been scheduled for the day of the Queen’s funeral, Devon are the Seniors' Channel League Champions for 2022.

L-R - Peter Bicknell, Colin Papworth, Tim Aggett, Rick Osborne, Mark Evans, Dave Eva, Tim Jones, Tony Allsopp, Chris Audin & Simon Knapman

The final game would have been against Glamorgan, the only county who could catch Devon’s haul of 5 match wins, but the Devon for and against tally was such that even a 15-0 Glamorgan win would not have affected the direction in which the title was going. Over the season Devon stood at 58.5 for, 16.5 against. Common sense prevailed, the match declared a draw and Devon Champions.

Team Manager Tim Aggett has used a tight complement of just 13 players over the course of the season, with 8 playing in all 5 of the matches contested. This is both blessing and curse – the highly successful group has developed an incredible sense of team and togetherness so amply demonstrated by the reaction to the Allsopp injury at the SCF Finals, but has at the same time rendered opportunities for other players difficult. The support and enthusiasm of those not getting to play has been absolutely brilliant and just as key a part of the overall team ethos.

Over the five matches only one session has been lost, the morning Greensomes against Cornwall, but that day the singles were won 7-3. Whilst the morning can set the tone it is in those 10 afternoon singles matches that the side has been incredibly effective. Over the course of the season from 50 singles matches Devon have won 38, halved 5 and lost just 7.

Whilst Devon might not currently have the international/past international players available to other counties in the competition, we do have quality right down the order. And beyond.
