DEVON GOLF

SENIORS' STABLEFORD CHAMPIONSHIP

Portmore Golf Park provided a fabulous venue for the Seniors' Championship on 7th September. 17 Devon clubs were represented, with several of the highly successful DevonGolf Seniors' Team in the mix. The competition was an 18 hole Stableford with 6 prizes for the best Nett Stableford scores and a shiny trophy for first place. There were also prizes for the top 3 gross Stableford scores, with the top score winning the Bert Hudson Trophy. An added bonus was for the Best Nett Stableford score for an age 65+ player.

First out was Mark Evans (RND), a member of the DevonGolf Seniors' team. Mark posted 32 points to set the bar and, as a scratch player, was leader in the clubhouse on both nett and gross placings. Just a couple of tee times later, John Elnaugh (HI 16.4/PH 18 - Portmore) clocked up 36 points to hold the lead for a very short time. In the group behind, Kevin Blaber (HI 3.3/PH 4 - Yelverton) knocked John back a place with his 36 points, better on countback. He also knocked Mark Evans into second place in the Scratch Stableford. No other stunning scores came in until Chris Norman (HI  6.7/PH 8 - Saunton) came in with 38 points to lead the Nett Stableford, but only posting 30 points in the Scratch, leaving Kevin Blaber unmoved - a position which didn't change.

After that, it was a waiting game. With some strong players from the DevonGolf Seniors' Team still on the course, nothing could be taken for granted. But, when their cards were handed in, nothing changed on the leader board.

Congratulations Chris Norman of Saunton on winning the Seniors' Championship Stableford and the 65+ Best Nett Stableford competition. Congratulations Kevin Blaber on winning the Bert Hudson Trophy for the Best Gross Stableford score and second in the Nett Stableford.

All praise to Josh Webber and his greens staff of Neil, Sam and Rodney for presenting the course in magnificent condition after one of the driest summers on record. Also evident was the amount of work underway to improve the course with an enlarged lake and new tees to lengthen the course. Although several commented on the clever 6th and 8th par 3 holes which took no prisoners and vowed to come back to conquer. Amanda, Kirsty, Max, Emily and Carys were busy feeding and watering players in the clubhouse and did a great job. DevonGolf President Geoff Green braved the change in weather to stand on the first tee for nearly 4 hours to send players on their way. Safely warm in the clubhouse was Wendy Stanbury in charge of registration and scoring. It takes a team to run a competition...... thanks to everyone.
