CLEAN SWEEP FOR LAWRENCE & SEARLE IN FOURSOMES

It was an early start at Teignmouth Golf Club for the DevonGolf Men's Inter-Club Foursomes played over 36 holes. There was some relief, however, that the hot weather had finally broken but no real rain was forecast. The course, less bouncy than it has been, still had plenty of surprises and there were more lost balls and double digit scores on some holes than these top quality players have clocked up in years!

With referee Jane MacDonald Smith on hand all day and the morning starter Lorraine Dunn sending the players off the first tee, there were some interesting first hole scores to send the heart plummeting down with still another 35 holes to go....

Early scores of 77 from DevonGolf Seniors' Team stalwarts Rick Osborne & Simon Knapman (Churston) and their playing partners Sam Williams & Dave Hunt (Teignmouth) held good for much of the first round. Ollie Tanton & Neil James (Royal North Devon) came in later to post a 78. It wasn't until the penultimate round that these scores were blown out of the water with a 67 from James Allum & Ben Sclater (Warren) and a 68 from Peter Lawrence & Mike Searle (Woodbury Park). Game on!

In round 2 more than half the field were unable to better their first round score, although Eliot Baker & Jay Scott (Tiverton) did so by 10 shots for a 68 and 36 hole total of 146. All eyes were now on the back of the field but round 1 leaders Allum & Sclater couldn't keep up the pace, posting a round 2 score of 78 to match Baker & Scott's 146. Could Lawrence & Searle do it? Yes they could! They posted a fantastic round 2 score of 68 to match their round 1 and were the clear winners by 10 shots.

Thanks to all at Teignmouth Golf Club, particularly the greens staff who provided a great course after a very testing dry spell. To Gina and her staff in the clubhouse for feeding and watering the players with such aplomb and Rob in the Pro Shop for his all round support and speedy back up when computers decided not to play nicely. Thanks to round 1 starter Lorraine Dunn (Teignmouth) and referee Jane MacDonald Smith (Teign Valley). DevonGolf Vice President Pam St Leger started round 2 and assisted Teignmouth's Club Captain Nick Webb with the prize giving. DevonGolf's Wendy Stanbury welcomed the players and sorted them out with her usual charm, ably assisted by Competitions' Director Tim Aggett.

It was a great day for a competition which hasn't been run for several years but now looks to have cemented its' place very firmly back in the DevonGolf competitions calendar.
