Long and very hot summer days are the norm this year and all golfers are suffering cruel bounces from great shots. It was the same at Tiverton Golf Club when they welcomed golfers to the South West Mid Amateur Open for the Dartmoor Trophy. The saving grace was the excellent conditions of the greens, a testament to the skill of the Tiverton Golf Club greens staff.
Only 16 clubs were represented in this 36 hole stroke play competition for the Dartmoor Trophy. Although an open competition, only representatives from St Mellion Golf & Country Club and Tall Pines Golf Club came from outside the county.
An early gross 72 came in from Lee Wilson (Teignmouth), a leading score which held until the final two groups of players came in. James Pickard (Sidmouth) and Tom Woodhouse (Exeter) both matched Lee's score. Pete Lawrence (Woodbury Park) was the nearest contender with gross 74. Vying for the top 2 nett prizes after round 1 were Lee Wilson (4) with nett 68, Mike Copperwhite (3 - Stover) nett 73 and Tom Woodhouse (0) with nett 74.
As cruel as it seemed in the excruciating heat, round 2 players again set off under the capable supervision of DevonGolf President Geoff Green. Tiverton Golf Club staff had set up hydration stations (water stops to you and me) to help players on holes 5, 9 and 14 and their efforts were much used and very appreciated.
Tim Aggett (Warren) posted a credible round 2 score of 78 to add to his first round 76 giving him a total of 154. He was again left waiting in the clubhouse (it was cooler than outside!) to see if it could be beaten, knowing there were some pretty handy players throughout the field. It wasn't until the final 2 groups of players returned to the clubhouse that Tim's position changed. In the penultimate group James Pickard (Sidmouth) posted a second round score of 75, added to his first round score of 72, total 147, he knocked Tim temporarily into second place. But it was the final group had also saved the best till last. Tom Woodhouse, with a first round of 72, shot 79 for a 151 total and second place. St. Mellion's Richard Ackland posted the final card of the day and his first round of 75 and a second round of 77 gave him a total of 152 for third place.
The winner of the Dartmoor Trophy and a DevonGolf voucher of £250 was James Pickard from Sidmouth Golf Club.
