JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2022 WERE SENSATIONAL!!!

Bigbury Golf Club pulled out all the stops, inside and out, to welcome DevonGolf's finest junior golfers for the Devon Junior Championships. A huge thank you to all at Bigbury Golf Club for making these young golfers so welcome.

The junior boys started the day with an early tee time of 8am and 36 holes of stroke play ahead. It was already hot as they teed off the tricky first hole with OOB on the left. The golf throughout the day was stunning but 16-year old Joel Warne (2) from Stover Golf Club surprised even himself with an 8-under par first round, gross 62. His careful course management with a 4 iron off the first tee stood him in great stead. This broke the 13-year course record of 64. Click here for an in-depth report on Joel's remarkable day.

Joel's playing partner Stanley White (1) from Saunton Golf Club shot 72 positioned second after 18 holes, as did Jack Dart (1) from Churston Golf Club. The tricky bit for Joel was to keep his head for the second round and for the other players not to give up with Joel having such a commanding lead. Not surprisingly, Joel could not repeat the morning's remarkable performance but his very credible 73 gave Stanley hope as they played their second round together. Stanley shone in the afternoon with the lowest gross of 66, and after 27 holes was only 1 back with Stan at -5 at the turn and Joel 4 over. Stan eventually finished 2 under par total for the 36 holes with Joel finishing 5-under par to become the Devon Junior Boy's Champion 2022.

Joel also won the U16 gross prize in his age category as a result of winning the overall prize.

But it wasn't just Joel having his day on the course. 12 year old Archie Hall from Staddon Heights Golf Club had a gross 85, nett 60 and gross 84, nett 59 to finish nett 21-under par to scoop the Devon Junior Boy's Nett Champion prize.

And the excitement continued as county player Jack Thorpe from Woodbury Park, age 12, had his first Hole in One on the 7th, 216 yard, par 3.

Huge thanks to Bigbury Golf Club, Club Manager Jason, the catering and greens staff. We couldn't have asked for more from anyone. A special mention to Lady Captain Sarah West and her volunteer team who ball spotted throughout the day with smiles and good humour in the terrific heat.
