COUNTY CARD PAIRS STABLEFORD A GREAT SUCCESS
Churston Golf Club hosted the final County Card Stableford of 2022. It was a full field of 62 pairs from all across the county. 26 different clubs were represented and whilst most pairings were men, there were 9 mixed teams and 2 all women teams.
Matthew and his team at Churston Golf Club had pulled out all the stops. The course, in spite of the long, hot and dry spell, played well. The gain from the extra roll on the ball was tempered by the need to land in front of the pin or face rolling straight off the back. In spite of that, all pairings came in with varying scores and smiles on their faces and a great meal thanks to Sharon and the caterers.
With prizes down to 8th place and a £150 voucher for the winning pair, there was a lot to play for. One of the earliest scores to set the pace came from home club members Peter MacLoughlin (18) and Nigel Garnett (11) with a very creditable 44 points. It was a score that held for a good couple of hours until the mixed pairing of Frank Kelly ((9) and Barbara Kelly (14) made their trip from Saunton Golf Club worthwhile, with another 44 points to push Peter & Nigel down a place on count back. County Card stalwart Solomon Singh (26) and his daughter Zia Singh (20) also did Saunton Golf Club proud with 43 points to post a place on the leader board. In fact, 4 of the prizes went to Saunton and Ilfracombe Golf Clubs who made the long trek from North Devon. And although there were only 9 mixed pairings playing, 3 of them featured in the prizes.
3½ hours after the first pairings teed off, Hugh Dorliac (16) and Paul Renken (18) from Sidmouth Golf Club posted 45 points to set the bar high. John Gavin (12) and Julie Gavin (20) from Saunton Golf Club gave Hugh and Paul a good run for their money with a fine 44 points, pushing Frank & Barbara and Peter & Nigel down a place on count back.

The joy of the County Card Stablefords is that they are for all golfers in Devon who are members of an affiliated Devon club - men, women and juniors. They are good fun days and great value.
