DEVONGOLF
On Saturday, 7th May, the Women’s Squad was invited to Woodbury Park Golf Club for coaching supported by DevonGolf. It was the first of two morning sessions with Advanced PGA Professional Gary Milne and 8 attended. A series of events took place focusing on pitching, controlling the ball flight, along with numerous putting drills and tips on how to play from awkward lies around the green. The sun shone from start to finish and, after a short lunch break, the women put the morning's practice to good use and took on the DevonGolf U18 Boys in a match with a Foursomes format. Foursomes is not an easy format and both the women and the boys gained from the extra Foursomes experience.
The matches were hard fought with shots given as appropriate for both sides. The women lost 3-1 overall, with 2 matches going to the 18th hole. Sophie Page and Gudrun Nolan, both from East Devon Golf Club, lost on the18th, as did Lauren McGinnis (Churston) and Carys Morris (Tiverton). Meanwhile, current County Champion Abby Turner (Okehampton) and Karen Friendship (Yelverton) joined forces for the first time and had a convincing win 7-5. The final group was Liz Bird (Royal North Devon) and Stacey Ford (Okehampton) had to give a shot and lost out 5-4 against two young boys who combined well and played some outstanding golf at times.
It was clear that the players had found both the morning coaching and the afternoon's matches a very useful bonding exercise and went away tired but having picked up some useful coaching tips.
A thank you Alderman Tooling, our new sponsors of the DevonGolf women’s squad. Smart new FJ caps were gifted and worn - with new woolly hats to come. The women looked incredibly smart in their new headgear which are in the women and girls' Devon colours of navy and pale blue.
