DEVON GOLF

THE LATE JOSÉ BRUCE

It is with sadness that I have to inform you that José Bruce passed away last week at the age of 99 and would have been 100 in September.

José gave up her life membership several years ago due to failing health and was a member of Exeter Golf & Country Club for a very long time.

José was an excellent single figure golfer and played for the Still Cup team with many photographs of her in our locker room spanning the 1960’s and 1970’s. During her golfing career José held the following positions.

> Lady Captain at Exeter in 1962.

> Devon Ladies' Captains Golf Society - DLCGS - was founded 20th of November 1963, and it is believed that José  was a founder member.

> Chairman of English Ladies' Golf Association South West -ELGA SW - 1996/1997.

> Devon County Ladies' Golf Association - DCLGA - Captain 1967/68.

> DLCGS Captain in 1975.

> DCLGA President 1984/86.

José kindly donated the José Bruce Bowl to the County as is awarded to the Women's Amateur Championship Runner Up.

José had the privilege of cutting the DLCGS’s 50th Anniversary Cake in 2013. In March 2014 José presented the DLCGS with a silver dish named the Armada Dish to be awarded to the overall winner at their Spring Meeting. José attended many Spring Meetings to present the Armada Dish, the last time at Stover in 2018. She was not well enough to attend any more.

Later in her life José volunteered to work in the Royal Devon & Exeter hospital charity shop. She also enjoyed taking caravan holidays with her good friend Anneka Roberts, a charming golfer who is remembered for her classic golf swing.

Rumour has it that in her youth she was in the Women’s Auxiliary and taught the Queen, then a princess, to drive! José's funeral is on the 23rd of February, details as follows:

Noon at  Exeter Crematorium and 1pm at Exeter Golf & Country Club - Mews.
