MEN'S CHANNEL LEAGUE PLAY-OFF FINAL

Team Manager Andy Parker reports:

DevonGolf's Elite players came up against Glamorgan in the Channel League play-off final held at Long Sutton Golf Club, Somerset. The team selected were the nucleus of players used throughout the campaign. Unfortunately, we had two withdrawals through injury and work commitments.

Jack Pope, Eliot Baker, Jack Jeffery, Chris McGill, Ben Sclater, Lewis Beer, Ben Sandry, Leigh Jones
Sam Dunn, Jay Scott , Matt Lyne

We knew this was going to be a tough challenge as opponents Glamorgan had recently beaten National Champions Gloucestershire to reach the final.

The morning foursomes commenced with just enough light to see the opening tee shots struck. Sam Dunn (Warren) and regular partner Jack Pope (Exeter) continued their fine Foursomes play with a 3-2 victory. The Tiverton pair of Eliot Baker and Jay Scott gelled together well and came out on top winning 3-2. The two Bens paired up again (Sclater - Warren & Sandry - Woodbury Park) with the latter coming in for the injured Pete Lawrence. They played some consistent and solid golf but went down 2-1. Exeter's young guns Lewis Beer and Jack Jeffery failed to find their rhythm early on and just couldn't find top gear, losing 5-4. The pairing of Leigh Jones (East Devon) and Matt Lyne (Stover), who flew in from Portugal to play. had a real tussle but eventually lost 1 down.

The morning's score - DevonGolf 2 - Glamorgan 3.

It was decided to play the singles in fourballs to coincide with the host club's tee time bookings. Jack Pope was on his game and in a tight match won 2-1. Sam Dunn couldn't find his A game or get the putts to drop and lost 5-4. Eliot Baker was in control for large parts of his match but was edged out, losing 1 down. Ben Sandry was struggling with his swing on the front 9 but managed to find something and battled on but lost 2 down. Jay Scott found his groove early and was always in control winning 4-3. Matt Lyne struggled to find his consistent flowing form and went down 4-2. Talented Jack Jeffery was 5 down through 6, but with words of encouragement in his ears he found some determination and will to eventually lose 2-1. Ben Sclater was involved in a close encounter throughout but went down 2-1. Lewis Beer was down early but showed great character to take his match to the 17th but lost 2-1. Leigh Jones was up against it with his opponent rattling off some birdies but bounced back with some of his own but unfortunately lost 3-2.

The afternoon's score - DevonGolf 2 - Glamorgan 8 and the final score DevonGolf 4 - Glamorgan 11.

It wasn't the result we wanted but I can't fault the effort and dedication from this group of players. It's been a privilege and a pleasure to work with all the Elite squad they should be proud of their achievements this year.

Sam Dunn

I must make a special mention of Sam Dunn who has decided to call it a day with county golf. Sam has represented DevonGolf for ten years and been a major player in that time. He has showed great dedication and commitment. The new crop of younger players have looked to him for guidance and Sam was always eager to oblige. Sam will be missed by the whole group with his sense of fun and his ability as a quality player. We wish Sam all the best - but the door is always open.....
