DEVON WOMEN'S SECOND TEAM PROGRESS TO THE FINAL

A beautiful day greeted Devon and Dorset Women's Second Teams at Churston Golf Club for the Women's Second Teams' version of the Inter-Counties' Championships. Instead of meeting over 3 days and each county playing each county, the matches are held on separate days to lead to the final. Devon were drawn to play Dorset and Cornwall but Cornwall withdrew earlier in the year due to Covid concerns, leaving just Dorset v Devon in the group. The format was 3 Greensomes games in the morning and 6 Singles games in the afternoon.

Devon had a fantastic morning, securing 3 wins in the Foursomes. After lunch Rebekah Nicholls (Dainton Park) led the team, narrowly losing on the 17th to Louise Petitte - Dorset's strongest player. Carys Morris (Portmore) dug deep and held onto a 1 hole lead to beat Emma Hardy on the 18th. Devon only required 1 more point for the match and Charlotte Husband (Exeter), despite a back injury, had a great win against Megan Withnal to secure the match point on the 17th. Jess Francis (Churston) was edged out on the 17th by Dorset's Rebecca Martin and Lorna Elliott (Dartmouth) took her game to the 18th to win 1 up. Sophie Page (Exeter) played the experienced Cathy McFarlane-Thompson and won the 18th hole to halve the game.

Devon had won 6½ - 2½ to progress to the finals at East Devon on 3rd October, playing against other divisional winners who have yet to be decided between Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

This was a really great result as it is the first time the women have been able to get together for 2 years. Successful new partnerships and friendships are forming. Let's hope their success continues to the final.
