THE MEN'S TEAM WIN v SOMERSET IN CHANNEL LEAGUE AWAY MATCH

Andy Parker, DevonGolf's Men's Elite Team Manager, reports:

On Sunday, 22nd August the DevonGolf Men's Elite team travelled to Clevedon Golf Club to play Somerset in their latest Channel League match.

Three players made the long trip back from the Brabazon Trophy after failing to make the 36 hole cut, showing great commitment to the group. My thanks to Jay Scott (Tiverton), Lewis Beer (Exeter) and Craig Passmore (Torquay).

Foursomes
In the opening match the ever dependable pair of Sam Dunn (Warren) and Jack Pope (Exeter) were too strong for the Somerset pair and won 4-3. In the second match Eliot Baker (Tiverton) and Lewis Beer (Exeter) struggled to get into their normal competent play and lost 5-4. In match 3, another strong pairing, Pete Lawrence (Woodbury Park) and Craig Passmore, were in control of their game but some unforced errors meant it went to the 18th. It came down to the experienced Lawrence to hole a 15ft putt for victory. Jay Scott (Tiverton) and Matt Lyne (Stover) played very consistent golf and finished winners at 4-3. The final match saw Chris McGill (Warren) returning to the side after some injury problems and Jack Philpotts (Tavistock) who had shown some decent form. Unfortunately there was no fairy tale ending and, despite playing some good golf, their opponents were too strong and they lost 4-3.

Foursomes Result: Somerset 2 - DevonGolf 3

Singles
With Dunn teeing up first, he managed to keep his unbeaten record going and won 2 up. Pope played his normal reliable game and despite having a wrist injury won 3-1. Passmore, up against a Welsh Junior International, was far too strong and came out a 5-4 winner. Baker gained a early lead but was pegged back and halved his match. Lawrence was in cruise control against a Somerset debutant and was 7 up. However, the young junior showed great character and eventually lost 4-2, Lawrence remains unbeaten. Beer was involved in a tight battle but with his determination to the fore, he came out on top 2-1. Saunton Club Champion Scott  was in control throughout his match and won 4-3. McGill came up against Somerset's leading player and battled well but eventually lost 2-1. Lyne was involved in a real nip and tuck match, 1 down playing 17. With a crowd watching, Matt chipped in to win the hole. On the 18th Matt hit a great second shot onto the green and sealed his victory holing a 20ft birdie putt. Philpotts came up against a strong competitor and lost 4-3.

Singles Result: Somerset 2½ - DevonGolf 7½

The result at the end of the day was a fine win for the Devon team - Somerset 4½ - DevonGolf 10½

This group of players continue to go from strength to strength and it bodes well for the next Channel League fixture at home to Cornwall, to be played at Yelverton Golf Club..
