SOUTH WEST MEN'S INTER COUNTIES' - IT CAME DOWN TO THE WIRE

Day 6 and Devon top the leaderboard as they go into the final day against Gloucestershire. Devon led with 4 points to Gloucestershire's 3.5 points moving into the final days play. Singles matches in the morning are worth 1 point for a win and 0.5 for a halved match. The Foursomes in the afternoon is 1.5  points for a win and 0.75 for a halved match.

What a fantastic match to finish an amazing week at the wonderful course that is Burnham & Berrow Golf Club. The club had pulled out all the stops for the week to support this South Western Counties' Golf Association Championship. During particularly difficult COVID times, no effort was spared to ensure player health and safety to allow golf to be played in its' most competitive form.

Teeing off in the morning's singles matches, Sam Dunn (Warren) led for Devon and lost by just 1 hole. Next up was Craig Passmore (Torquay) who lost 3-2. Young Jack Pope (Exeter) started the charge winning by 2 holes. Lewis Beer (Exeter) won 3-1, Eliot Baker (Tiverton) had a convincing 5-3 win and Peter Lawrence (Woodbury Park) won 2-1. Matt Millar (Dainton Park) was beaten 3-2 and Fred Bishop (Exeter) finished the singles losing 4-3. Not so dusty as that was 4 points all and everything still to play for. A draw would see us home!

Sam Dunn was teamed with Jack Pope in the afternoon's Foursomes and were on fire, winning 5-4. Craig Passmore and Matt Millar put the morning's rounds behind them and fought hard to halve their match with a 30-footer on the last for a chance to win but it was not meant to be as it slid by a few by a mere 2 inches . Lewis Beer and Eliot Baker were unable to continue their winning streak and lost by 1 hole after the Gloucestershire pair made 2 on the par 3 17th to go 1up and halved the last with a solid par. Fred Bishop and Benjamin Sclater (Warren) couldn't shake off their opponents' strong play losing 5-4. That meant the afternoon's Foursomes points were Devon 2.25 and Gloucestershire 3.75 - making Gloucestershire the winning team for the week as a result of taking the match point. Congratulations to Gloucestershire and congratulations to our DevonGolf team who put in fine performances throughout the week, showing great determination, fortitude and team spirit.

Team Manager Andy Parker said, "I am absolutely so proud of every player and their contribution throughout the week. My heartfelt thanks to them all. Congratulations to Eliot Baker, Lewis Beer and Jack Pope on being selected to represent the South West team against the Midlands in September."
