DEVON GOLF

DAY 2 - SOUTH WEST MEN'S INTER-COUNTIES.

Day 1 was a great start for the DevonGolf team as they finished their matches against Cornwall with 9¼ points.

Team Manager Andy Parker has difficult decisions to make when picking players each day. Today's opponents were Wiltshire and the morning Singles saw some close matches with Sam Dunn (Warren) pulling through with a win by 1 hole. Jack Pope (Exeter) and Peter Lawrence (Woodbury Park) both won 2-1. Lewis Beer (Exeter) made it look a bit easier with a 5-4 win. Matt Millar (Dainton Park), Eliot Baker (Tiverton) and Ben Sclater (Warren) posted losses with Craig Passmore (Torquay) taking away a half. The morning finished with Devon up with 4½ matches to Wiltshire's 3½.

The afternoon pairings were Dunn & Pope, Passmore & Millar and Fred Bishop (Exeter) & Sclater. Dunn & Pope had a 4-3 win and Passmore and Millar won well with 6-4. Bishop & Sclater battled hard but lost by 1 hole and Lawrence & Beer fought their corner hard but lost 3-1 down. All in all, a good day's golf from the men to finish T1 but in second place overall by virtue of games won behind Gloucestershire, with everything to play for.

Tuesday will see the main qualifying day which is Team combined Stroke Play event (team of 6) in an attempt to qualify for the England Golf National finals and to represent the South West Counties.

Wednesday's opponents are Somerset, currently lying in 5th place after the first 2 days' matchplay.
