DEVON GOLF

TOP PRACTICE FOR THE WOMEN'S FIRST TEAM

The South West Women's Inter-Counties’ Championship at Bristol and Clifton Golf Club is from Monday, 5th to Wednesday, 7th July. With a new format of 3 singles matches and two Foursomes matches, practice for the team is paramount. This has been hampered massively by Covid restrictions and weather.

On Saturday, 29th May, some of the DevonGolf Women's First team played against a DevonGolf Under 18 Boy's team at East Devon Golf Club in glorious sunshine. Harry Edworthy (Exeter), Ben Reynolds (Exeter), Theo Northover, Will Hunt (Saunton) and Matt Lewis (East Devon).

After weeks of rain and a cancelled match two weeks earlier, it was amazing to get some team members together to play competitive golf against up-and-coming county boys. Both team managers decided on a suitable format to ensure a focussed practice. A singles match with a fascinating new format took place between Liz Bird (RND) v Will Hunt with Liz coming out on top. Both played some quite brilliant golf at times and in the most wonderful spirit. Then followed two Foursomes Fourballs played over 9 holes. After two shots from the tee, the players hit the other person's ball – the best score was recorded against the opposition's best. After nine holes and the offer of homemade chocolate or fruit cake, partners were swapped to give the women and the boys a great opportunity to play with different team-mates. This proved both very enjoyable and successful in giving the women what they haven't been able to have - competition against some very good players who hit the ball a country mile even off the back tees!

Emily Morey, Amanda Burchell, Liz Bird, Gudrun Nolan, Lauren McGinnis

Emily Morey (East Devon) & Amanda Burchell (Bigbury) played a strong pairing of Harry Edworthy & Theo Northover. Once again, some very good golf was witnessed with the boys narrowly clinching a victory 1 up. Next up was the up and coming starlets of Gudrun Nolan (East Devon) and Lauren McGinnis (Churston). After playing some very good tee to green golf early on, they simply couldn't get the putts to drop. It was a close-run thing but the women narrowly lost 1 down to the strong pairing of Matt Lewis & Ben Reynolds.

All change after nine holes meant that Amanda Burchell and Lauren McGinnis paired up for the first time and played Theo Northover and Matt Lewis. Despite some close fought holes, the boys played brilliantly to win 3 /2. The final group saw East Devon`s pairing of Emily Morey and Gudrun Nolan paired up to play Ben Reynolds and Harry Edworthy coming away with a 2/1 win for the women.

The final result was 3/2 to the DevonGolf U18's Boy's Team who were terrific opponents for the women, giving great opposition with support and advice for the forthcoming SWW Inter-Counties' Championships.

DevonGolf Women's First Team are very grateful to East Devon Golf Club for providing us with a great course to play on, also Gary Milne (DevonGolf Head Coach and U18 Boy's Team Manager) and his team for giving the women such amazing competitive golf which will stand them in good stead at Bristol & Clifton Golf Club.
