GREAT RESULT FOR MEN'S CHANNEL LEAGUE v CORNWALL

The Men's Elite Squad's opening match in this year’s Channel League was against Cornwall at Launceston Golf Club.

With some players absent through playing in national events and one player in isolation, the team had two debutants - Matt Lyne (Stover) and Elliot Baker (Tiverton).

Debutant Matt Lyne

Debutant Elliot Baker

In the morning Foursome matches all games were tight through the front nine. Sam Dunn (Warren) & Jack Pope (Exeter) played steady golf to come out on top with a 2/1 win. The DevonGolf stalwarts Pete Lawrence (Woodbury Park) & Craig Passmore (Torquay) stepped up the tempo & came out 4/3 winners. Fred Bishop (Exeter), paired with the in-form Elliot Baker (Tiverton) on his debut, gelled really well to win 3/2. South West Counties' Week rookie Ben Sclater (Warren) was paired with debutant Matt Lyne (Stover) and they played silky smooth golf to gain a 3/1 victory. In a hard fought battle in the last game, Jay Scott (Tiverton) & Jack Jeffery (Exeter) were edged out on the last hole. After a fine morning's golf, Devon were leading 1-4.

The fine weather continued throughout the afternoon's Singles games and Passmore, leading the way, didn’t get off to the best of starts. He never got into his rhythm & lost early 6/5. Dunn, taking on former Devon Captain Bridgewater, had a very tight match but held on to win 2 up. Pope was not playing with his normal consistency and lost his match 2/1. Baker continued his fine form with his second win of the day 4/3. Lawrence was far too strong for his opponent and won comfortably 4/3. Bishop started his match well and was up but faded on the back 9 to lose 3/2. Sclater was in control of his game from the start and after playing some controlled golf won his match 2/1. Scott, struggled on the front 9, found some inner belief in his game to force a victory 2/1. Jeffery was down in his match for long periods and managed to take his game to the 18th to finish with an honourable half. Lyne was always chasing the game but couldn’t quite find his A game to make the difference & lost his match 4/2.

Overall, the group went on to record an excellent away victory 5½ - 9½.

The squad move on to South West Counties' Week at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club from Sunday, 6th June with confidence high. All support is welcome.
