MEET HANNAH - THE NEW U18s GIRLS' TEAM MANAGER

Hannah Stephens

A quick introduction - I’m Hannah Stephens, member of both Teignmouth Golf Club and The Warren Golf Club, I have recently been appointed as DevonGolf’s Under 18's Girls' Team Manager. This is a role I am hugely honoured and excited to be taking on, to support, encourage and empower the Devon Girls' team and, in turn, do my bit to help develop the future of our sport.

Having not had the opportunity to take golf up until my 30’s I am very passionate about encouraging everyone to get into golf, but girls and young women in particular, as we are still very much in the minority out on the course. Thankfully there are hugely encouraging initiatives from the golf industry and clubs across the country to strive towards gender balance and equality in terms of representation and access to golf, so the future is looking brighter. In my new role I hope to play my part and give a little back to the sport that has bought me so much enjoyment, not only through competition but also the fantastic friendships I’ve made along the way.

My simple objective is to lead, support and empower the girls to achieve their very best. I hope to do this by bringing bucket loads of enthusiasm and creating an environment in which the girls feel comfortable and confident, where they can be competitive and build strong friendships that will keep them interested in golf for years to come. I will do this supported by a wider team at DevonGolf who are all committed to the girls' development in the sport - Roger Worthington (Performance Director) and Paul Cloke (Operations Manager) plus a team of specialist coaches and the help and support of a wider team of parents and volunteers - all of whom I would like to thank in advance for their support.

As well as a programme of coaching and friendlies the main event on the girls calendar is the Girls' Inter-Counties, this year due to be held at Isle of Wedmore Golf Club, Somerset, from 8th-11th August (covid restriction dependant). This competition is played over 3 days with each county (Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset & Wiltshire ) playing the others in a mix of foursomes and singles games.

I would like to take this opportunity to give a huge thank you to the now retired County Junior Organiser Jo Donmall, Jo has worked so hard for the girls over the years and has been extremely helpful in this transitional period.

Here’s to a more ’normal’ year of golf and I hope to update you on the team's progress throughout the season.
