DEVONGOLF
DevonGolf are extremely grateful to the Women's Section at Staddon Heights who gave up their competition day for the DevonGolf County Medal Finals. And what a wonderful day it was - sunshine, blue sky and no wind. The course looked amazing and the views were stunning. There were smiles abounding all around. Smiles from the ladies of Staddon Heights who welcomed us to the course, started the women on the first tee and ball spotted at those slightly tricky holes.... Smiles from the players at the joy of getting back to golf proper, seeing faces that have been missed throughout the pandemic and a general 'joie de vivre' that's been missing in our lives.
Qualification criteria for the DevonGolf County Medal Finals is through a player's Home Club. Division 1 handicaps are up to 23.4, Division 2 are 23.5 up to 40.4. A County Medal is awarded to the player in the club in each division returning the lowest aggregate differential of the best 3 scores whilst playing in any qualifying 18 hole stroke play (medal) competition at her Home Club (excluding Open Competitions) during the golf year. Normally players in this event would have won their County Medal in 2020, but the pandemic put paid to that and Staddon Heights were hosting County Medal winners from 2019 - doesn't that sound a long time ago?
With due deference to being Covid compliant, Competition Secretary Colleen Skornia manned the reception desk just outside the clubhouse. Fortunately, the gorgeous weather made this an amenable task. Colleen greeted ladies from 29 Devon clubs with the Division 1 women teeing off first.
Although the conditions were seemingly benign, the course did not play easily. Lynne Veen (18) of Tiverton Golf Club emerged as Division 1 winner with a nett 76, Jennifer Roberts of Thurlestone was second with nett 78 and Sophie Brown (20) from Fingle Glen beat Penny Howson (16-Staddon Heights) and Cheryl Waterfield (16-Boringdon Park) on countback with a nett 80. The first to tee off for Division 2 were Mary Shepherd (Dainton Park) and Julie Lewis (Tiverton).
Catherine Griffiths (27-Boringdon Park) scored a nett 75 to emerge as the winner for Division 2. Clare Coates (28-Exeter G&CC) was second with a nett 78 and Pauline Bezzant (27-Holsworthy) was third with a nett 79. Congratulations! Click here for all Division 2 results.
DevonGolf is very grateful to all the staff at Staddon Heights who put in so much effort to make the day such a success.
