The first of the season’s Devon Golf Senior Order of Merit events took place at Warren Golf Club on Monday 12th April as the club staged an open for gentlemen over 50 years of age. Even at short notice the Warren had pulled out the stops. The course was presented in excellent condition, greens running at surprising pace for this early in the year, and we played at the full length; no let offs for senior golfers! Reception for all the players was as excellent as ever, both before and after golf.
Tough conditions greeted the 48 contestants, a stiff northerly breeze blowing off the river and very hard underfoot conditions. The occasional sideways rain and hail all added to the fun.
However, all this was as nothing to joint County President Richard Pascoe as the Stover 7-handicapper skipped around in 39 points to win the top handicap prize from the Home club’s Adrian Henley (8) on 36 and East Devon’s Malcolm Baker with 35. The mark for the remainder of the handicap prizes was 34 points, Richard’s Stover club mate Clive Spalding (7) pipping Tavistock’s Graham Ruth (5) on the back nine.
On the scratch front it was a battle between a couple of old local warhorses, Tim Aggett (+1, Warren) getting the better of County Senior Captain Colin Papworth (1, Teignmouth) on a back 9 countback after both scored gross totals of 33. It was countback again between 3rd and 4th as Ian Barnes (3, Saunton) beat Tony Allsopp (2, Tiverton) again on the back 9. Thurlestone’s Darryl Day (2) was 5th on 28.
The next County Senior Order of Merit events are in May, first at Teignmouth GC on May 13th, with the 2-day 36-hole Bob Knott Trophy at Churston GC on May 22nd and 23rd. Both clubs are still taking entries for the events, contact them direct.
