DEVONGOLF GOLD MEDAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Gold Medal Championships 2020

Sunday, 27th September, saw the magnificent Tiverton Golf Club host the revised format of the Gold Medal Championship. The day brought 50 men and 30 women from across the county, with over 25 clubs represented and battling it out for the Gold Medal Championship over 18 holes.

With the some of the best golfers being drawn to this event, the winner of this prestigious trophy would have to play some quality golf to rise to the top.

The Men's Gold Medal Championship featured many of the regular first team county players, four very strong county seniors players, coupled with a number of up and coming county juniors - among others trying to break into the county squad.

With a testing north-west wind the Tiverton golf course was holding no prisoners, and the results and CSS 73 reflected that, with a reduction only CSS based on the difficulties the course presented.

An early score saw Peter Howell from Exeter GCC take the clubhouse lead with a 3 over par 73 which proved to be tough to beat, to only see Past County Captain Pete Lawrence from Woodbury Park record a solid 72. It wasn't long until Devon seniors' county player Tim Aggett, from The Warren GC who can never be discounted when featuring in an elite event, posted an impressive 71. The tournament was not finished though, and the brother of a previous winner resulted in Jack Pope from Exeter GCC showing his class, shooting a clubhouse lead of 70 which was good enough to take the title.

The Women's Gold Medal Championship also did not disappoint, with the strongest players in the county showing why they feature in the County 1st Team. Last year's Devon Amateur Champion Julia Norman finished in the top three, with one of our strongest scratch players in the field, Keeley Clark from Torquay showing her class, posting a one over par 73. However, last year's winner of the Gold Medal and strongest handicap player in the event off +3, saw American college graduate Chloe Howard from Boringdon Park carding a solid level par 73.  This result saw Chloe win the Gold Medal for a second year in a row, and the third time in four years.

Thank you to Tiverton GC and the team for hosting the event and presenting the course in immaculate condition. The event certainly did not disappoint.... even in the revised format!
