DEVON SENIOR LADIES' TRIUMPH IN SOUTH WEST FOURSOMES

Amanda Leonard, Gilly Jarvis, Gro Lomas,
Captain Vicky Holloway, Sally Charnock & Sarah Hoff

On 30th September it was Devon’s turn to host the 2-day South West Senior Ladies’ Matchplay event, 36 holes each day, Foursomes format, played off scratch.

Devon’s Senior Team Captain Vicky Holloway hosted it at her home club Torquay who were superbly supportive.  The team were an experienced golfing group made up of Vicky (Torquay), Sarah Hoff (Stover), Sally Charnock (Saunton), Amanda Leonard (Libbaton), Jane Wayman (Exeter), Gilly Jarvis (Yelverton) and Gro Lomas (Royal North Devon).

The competition normally involves 6 counties – Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Dorset who were last year’s winners.  Unfortunately, Cornwall and Somerset were unable to field teams this year.

On the first day the Devon ladies started with a great 2-1 win against Wiltshire. Gloucestershire lost 2-1 against last year’s champions Dorset. On the morning of the second day, Devon lost 2-1 against the strong team from Gloucestershire. Wiltshire had a great draw against Dorset so it all came down to the afternoon’s Foursomes. Wiltshire had a surprise win against Gloucestershire which gave Devon the chance to win overall - if they could beat Dorset. In the first game Vicky and Sally gained a creditable half against Dorset’s top pairing. In game 2, Gilly and Sarah played some cracking golf to win the game 3-2. In game 3 Gro Lomas and Amanda Leonard gave us a nail biting game but, in the end, secured an amazing win 3-2 for Devon to take the honours for the first time in 17 years.

The celebrations were on a par with the Solheim Cup- a nail biting finish for a great team!
