BOWMAKER AT TAVISTOCK
The last ladies' DevonGolf competition of the year was played at Tavistock Golf Club, There were 114 ladies making up 38 teams (two teams had to withdraw at the last minute) from clubs throughout Devon. The format for the day was a 3-Ball Betterball Stableford competition played off 90% handicap. The weather was much improved than had been forecast earlier in the week. However ,conditions were not ideal as by the afternoon the wind was gusting up to 41 mph!
The staff at Tavistock Golf Club were awaiting our arrival at 7am to help set up for the busy day ahead. The first team set off at 8am by Fran Horton, Ladies’ Captain at Tavistock Golf Club, and she in turn was ably assisted by members of her committee. The first few teams were reappearing in the clubhouse well before the final team teed off at 2.30pm and were soon tucking into warming tasty meals whilst reminiscing over those missed putts and wayward shots.
For the early starters the scoring was respectable. Later cards reflected the increasingly difficult windy conditions experienced out on the golf course. Everyone keenly watched the live leaderboard to see if the early leaders would be challenged but the earlier scores stood firm.
Prize giving was just after 6.30pm and opened by a very warm welcome from Fran and she graciously presented the prizes and the Bowmaker Trophy.
On behalf of DevonGolf I warmly thanked Tavistock Golf Club, Sue the manager, all catering and bar staff, Russell the Pro and the green-keeping staff. Everyone at Tavistock Golf Club made us extremely welcome and were always on hand to help to ensure the long day ran smoothly.
There were 8 prizes and 9 Two’s (although, once again, one team who carded a Two had not paid to enter!)
