SHEELAH CREASY BOWL SEMI FINALS – TORQUAY GOLF CLUB

The Sheelah Creasy Bowl semi-finals were held at TorquayGolf Club on a day that echoed the challenging weather conditions of the quarter finals last month – heavy rain that continued throughout the morning. Despite this, the ladies set off in good spirits with County Captain Anne Norman seeing them all off the first tee. By lunchtime the greens were starting to flood and we had to halt proceedings and bring everyone back to the clubhouse.Thankfully the rain relented and the course drained quickly and,, with np little help from the greens staff out with squeegies, we were able to resume play after an hour.

The first match was between Teignmouth and Staddon Heights and this proved to be a gripping battle between the two teams. Teignmouth took the first 3 wins in games 1, 3 & 4 with game 2 being won by Staddon Heights on the 19th hole. Teignmouth seemed to be in the stronger position but the Staddon ladies dug deep and won game 6, and then games 5 and 7 also went down the 19th hole with wins in both games for Staddon Heights to take the match.

While the first match was still being played, the results were coming in for match 2 between Wrangaton and Woodbury Park. Games 1 & 2 saw a win for each team but the Woodbury ladies then won games 3, 4, 5 and 6 to take the match, with a last minute win in game 7 for Wrangaton. We were in the unusual position of match 2 being over while match 1 was still being played - and the atmosphere was buzzing with all the ladies congregating around the clubhouse.

Staddon Heights will now play Woodbury Park in the Sheelah Creasy Bowl final at Yelverton on 27th September. After a warm welcome to Torquay Golf Club from Lady Captain Helen Jones, County Captain Anne presented semi-finalist trophies to Lady Captain Lorraine Dunn on behalf of the Teignmouth ladies and Team Captain Katie Purcell on behalf of the Wrangaton ladies – congratulations to both teams for reaching the last 4 of the competition.

My thanks to Torquay Golf Club for hosting us –  to Manager Robert and Lady Captain Helen for their help with planning. On the day, thanks also to Val for the wonderful flower display on the trophy table. Thanks to Head Greenkeeper Jason for his help on the course, to the Pro Shop and to the ever helpful bar and catering staff. My thanks also to County Captain Anne, to Vicky for helping with reporting results and to our Rules Official Terry.
