PRESIDENT'S TROPHY SEMI-FINALS AT DOWNES CREDITON

The President’s Trophy Semi-Finals were held at Downes Crediton Golf Club Thursday, 5th September. The sun shone but the brisk wind reminded us that autumn is upon us. DevonGolf President Carolyn Maynard was on the first tee to see all the ladies off with words of encouragement, and a good number of spectators were there supporting their teams.

The first match was between Dainton Park and Staddon Heights.  We saw some quality golf from all the ladies but Dainton Park proved the stronger team on this occasion, winning the first 4 games to take the match win.

The second match was a North Devon battle between Ilfracombe and Saunton, with similar handicaps in each game. This was a very closely fought match - Ilfracombe won the first 2 games, with wins in games 3, 4 and 5 to Saunton. The excitement was building when it was realised that match 6 was all square after 18 holes. The ladies were just about to head off to play the 19th when news came in that Saunton had won game 7 to take the match.  

Dainton Park will now play Saunton in the President’s Trophy Final at Yelverton on 27th September.   

Carolyn presented semi-finalist trophies to team captains Jane Burley Brown and Gill Whitelock on behalf of Staddon Heights and team captain Karen Green on behalf of Ilfracombe – congratulations to all their ladies for reaching this stage of the competition.

My thanks to Downes Crediton Golf Club for hosting us –  to Golf Administrator Devon Greenslade and Lady Captain Shirley Stunell for all their help with planning.  Shirley was also responsible for the wonderful flower display on the trophy table. Thanks go to the ladies who helped with ball spotting, to the greens staff, Barry in the Pro Shop and to the attentive bar and catering staff. My thanks also to DevonGolf President Carolyn and to our Rules Official Terry.
