DEVON GOLF

DAY 1 ENGLAND GOLF BOYS' COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

David Baldwin, Craig Passmore, Jack Jeffery, Fred Bishop, James Reed, Matt Millar & Jay Scott

This final is contested by 4 county boys’ teams, each representing one of the England Golf regional groups. The round robin match play event takes place over 3 days. Each day’s play consists of 3 games of 18-hole Foursomes in the morning and 6 games of 18-hole Singles in the afternoon. Each county enters a team of 7 players. Any 6 of these may play in the foursomes and any 6 in the singles of each match.

Day 1 was DevonGolf v Kent and our Foursomes pairings were James Reed (Exeter) and Fred Bishop (Exeter), Matt Millar (Dainton Park) and Jay Scott (Tiverton) and the final pairing was Captain Craig Passmore (Torquay) and Jack Jeffery (Exeter). After 9 holes James and Fred were 2 up, Matt and Jay 3 up but it was tough going for Craig and Jack who were 4 down after 6 holes. The games were played out with James and Fred winning through 3-2, Matt and Jay taking a half and Craig and Jack unable to turn the match around losing 7-5 against a strong Kent pair. Honours were even at 1½ points apiece.

The afternoon's 6 singles matches saw Matt Millar v Ollie Lewis-Perkins, James Reed v Miles Gray, Captain Craig Passmore v George Young, Fred Bishop v James Wright, David Baldwin v Oliver Gaisford and Jay Scott v Jacob Kelso. Jack Jeffery was rested for the afternoon.

It was a mixed bag of results at the turn. Matt Millar was 1 down, James Reed AS. Craig Passmore was 1 up, as was Fred Bishop. David Baldwin in his first game of the day was 2 down and Jay Scott 1 down. Much to do......

Our DevonGolf boys dug in and Matt Millar, fresh from his success at becoming DevonGolf Junior Champion at the weekend, won his singles 3-2. James Reed took it from AS at 9 to win 3-1. Craig Passmore won by 1 hole and Fred Bishop halved his match. David Baldwin hung on hard but lost 2-1, leaving Jay Scott to finish and also losing 2-1.

Not a bad day's work for the team, finishing with 1½ points this morning and 3½ points this afternoon to beat Kent 5 points to 4. Lancashire beat Northamptonshire 7-2  for 2 points and are in first place. Devon finished day 1 in second place by virtue of match score difference to Lancashire also with 2 points.

Good luck tomorrow, boys!
